There is no greater challenge to us as individuals or as teams than adversity. This was shown on Tuesday night. The conditions for soccer were less than perfect. But, soccer is a sport played in almost any weather and we had a game to play. A few examples of adversity and soccer: A few weeks ago, Costa Rica had to play a FIFA qualifying game against the USA in a blizzard in Denver, Colorado. Not too many Ticos have touched snow and I bet none had ever played in it. We saw Canada's Christine Sinclair battle a different kind of adversity at the last World Cup in South Africa. Remember the flying elbow that shattered her nose. The Ticos couldn't overcome their adversity but Sinc did and she played on despite pain and discomfort. Our challenge on Tuesday was playing the best we could in cold and wet conditions while defending against a team that was really pressing on our goal. While we successfully defended and won the game, the game should teach us a few lessons take away a few lessons from how we played and how we can do better next time we face adversity: 1. The basics we practice are the skills that we must apply in every game, 2. Support and encourage one another at all times on and off the field. 3. Stay positive and enjoy the game and we will play better. 4. Put these things together and we will weather any storm!
