The score at the end of our game on Thursday night indicated success but did it reflect the team's performance during the balance of the game? Certainly, there was gritty effort including a rock solid performance by our keeper. As well, the first goal was first rate, A goal involving 5 or 6 perfectly weighted passes to players showing great field awareness, technique and tactics. While this one play and an insurance goal determined the outcome, it did not tell the story of the game. Our keeper faced great pressure and too many shots, we had very little possession and most of the game was played in our half of the pitch. No matter where you play soccer, you will hear coaches instruct players: first to the ball, square up to receive the ball, get control, first touch, move to space, communicate etc. Each of these instructions helps you play better soccer and the best way to include them in your game is to apply them, apply them, apply them... in PRACTICE! But we can only practice successfully if everyone of us comes to practice willing to focus, work hard, get sweaty and push ourselves to be the best player we can be. Effort at practice is rewarded by better performances at games. And, what does better performance lead to?
